I found my passion for Occupational Health Nursing early in my career. I enjoyed the opportunities the role gave me, and it prepared me to respond to any injury or illness that occurred on site. As I grew throughout my career and became board certified, I itched to find new experiences and challenges. Inspired to learn more about occupational health, I returned to school to earn my Master’s degree at UNC at Chapel Hill. I learned firsthand the intensity of my role, and I knew that if I wasn’t part of the solution, I was part of the problem.

It became clear to me while working to improve employ health across the country that companies face significant costs due to employee healthcare issues. As I moved into a leadership role, I found my friend and associate April Nelson. Her focus on improving worker health matched my own, and together we formed JC Michaelson Consulting.

I was lucky enough to grow up where a firm handshake is your bond. But the small town charm, while romantic, came with disadvantages. A farming injury could ruin a family or big business could take advantage of the small community.

I knew that I could make a difference for small business owners and farmers. As I studied exercise science and health, I quickly began to focus on athletic training. Absorbing new health and wellness management information became easier and easier. Eventually, I moved into the industrial sector, and began working with other healthcare professionals to manage, mitigate, and prevent workplace injuries and illnesses.

My career led me to my friend Jill Marshall. Her impressive and unique views on how to help navigate the healthcare system are incredibly effective. Our common goals help us work for the betterment of the workplace, together.
